Why doees anyone think that the great pengin has seel flippis. It's just isn't even right. TRhe pengin is the pengin you know, like robert dnearo y'know. He would also say "Yah talking me".

I'm talking about how his hands aren't even as regular hands and tim burton didnent even know what he was thinking when he did that i mean how could you do that to robet dnearo. And He didnent even say "Yah talkin to me"? in the whole film. I just find that to be whimsical and iritating even.

Ahhh! I see what you mean now. I agree entirely. Well, except for the Deniro part. (I hate to break it to you, but Penguin was played by Danny Devito in this one.) You should check out the thread called "what is the best thing about batman returns". I go on a whole thing about this movie.

Hey I don't know what the big thing is about the flippers guys. Tim Burton is an artistic genius and if he says that the penguin should have mutated hands who are we as self-respecting Batman fans to say that he's wrong. I mean he wasn't wrong to sew up Jack Skellington's mouth or put scissorhands on Johnny Depp?? And penguins have flippers so it was a smart move on Burton's part.

Sofa King - You're right. Robert De Niro should be cast as the penguin in the third movie, DeVito did a horrible horrible job as him in BR. I would have suggested James Caan but De Niro is an interesting contender. Good thinking bud! Great job Mr. Burton on being an artist.

If Batman Returns were a singular Tim Burton creation, then I'm pretty sure I'd agree with you. Unfortunately, it's far from it. When an "artistic genius" takes the reins of a cultural icon, it's very acceptable for that person to make artistic changes so long as he's loyal to the source. He shouldn't straight-out copy anything necessarily. But, Catwoman was never part-cat. Penguin was never part-penguin. The name "Penguin" was always just a nickname given to the character of Oswald Cobblepot. This is important. With your logic, Burton might've made Batman part actual bat. Or Two-Face with two full faces on one head. There is a thin line for these directors. And, while I like Burton's touch on many things, he damaged the Batman story irreparably for over a decade. Read a good Batman vs. Penguin book and I think you'll agree.

Penguin is not part penguin and that I recognize - and so does Burton. Do you suggest that Mr. Burton made Cobblepot part penguin Null? You are correct. American children born with flipper hands are in fact the lovechildren of man and penguin. (And doctors call it a "genetic condition. How naive!)

I read a few of the BvP comics as a boy, Null - did you? Bob Kane's Oswald Cobblepot was a bland character and Tim Burton did a wonderful job correcting him on his blunder. Burton touched on mankind's sardonic nature by making the nickname of "the penguin" one that scorned his physical appearance. Thus the penguin also had motivation to turn to a life of crime, a social separation from his brethren.

PS - Did the 60's TV series not do more harm to Gotham's dark image? But THAT was indeed reparable, because in the late 80's Mr. Burton managed to repopularize a comic book superhero that for decades had been seen in a campy light. Perhaps you and I would never have crossed paths if not for his efforts.

Also in my own years I have not encountered any who find the penguin to be a "cultural icon." Batman, perhaps. But I have not spoken of altering his image.

i have to agree with Null on this one. The whole flipper for hands thing is a little far fetched and completely disloyal to the comic books.
couldn't have agreed more.

Penguin was supposed to look like a penguin, but not to the extent of flipper hands. and correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure penguin WAS shunned because of his physical appearance, because he DOES look like a penguin (short, fat, beaked nose ect.) as a kid. the flipper hands weren't needed.
