Default Is it the same Joker?

After watching the movie (The Dark Knight) I had a conversation with my friend about the Joker character. My friend states that this Joker (Heath Ledger) is a sort of a copycat, who tries to imitate the Joker (Jack Nicolson), that he is just a follower. I don't think it's true but please, share Your opinions about this topic. Regards

if your friend was right (which he isn't) that would be the same as saying jack nicholson is a copycat of the joker(ceaser romero) from the adam west 60s batman tv show, heaths joker was a complete nutter stand and fight not scared of batman where as nicholsons joker was a not funny scared of batman joke of a psycho, just watch both nicholsons performance then watch heaths, or does your friend mean that heaths joker character wasn't the real joker but that the dark knight and batman begins were just prequels to the batman movie with nicholson?

From what my friend says appears that The Dark Night is what comes next after the times of Jack Nicolson Joker's reign. In his view, the original Joker (Nicolson) died, and Ledger's Joker is "one of those" (copycats). My friend made some comparisons between the mentioned Jokers. Nicolson's Joker fell into the acid what made his skin white and gave him the weird smile. Ledger's Joker explains how he got the scars on his mouth (i.e. cut by his father) and that he paints his face white, so he can't be the same Joker.

if your friend was right which he isn't it would mean nicholsons joker is also a copycat of the 60s tv joker from the adam west batman series.the dark knight is part of a retelling of the batman mythos (which has been retold several times in comic books with a new back story for the characters) when reinventing the joker the writers(christopher nolan and his brother) wanted to do there own version of the characters and the story of the joker and the acid had been done so a new reason for his apperance was written, there will always be comparisons i.e the white face, the green hair and the smile but that is just how the joker looks in every version from tv series, animated, comics and movies,if your friend was right and the dark knight is a sequel of batman why is james gordon a police commisioner (i.e commisioner gordon) in the movie with nicholsons joker yet in the dark knight he is liutenant gordon and doesn't become commisioner gordon till nearly the end of the movie, also why is there no mention of there being another joker (in the dark knight) who was killed.go back and watch batman begins and all will be clear.

Spot on here You basically said what I was going to say.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are set in the *early* days of Batman, so how could Heath Ledger's Joker possibly be a copycat of the real Joker? And also, as Kriskaos pointed out, there would of course be some mention of him not being the real Joker in the film.

In my opinion, Heath Ledger's Joker was much better than Nicolson's, so in my mind Ledger's Joker is a much more real version.

I think compared to the 60's Joker, the two are sort of similar. But other than that, I think Heath Ledger's preformance as the Joker was much different than the Jack Nicholson Joker. But I can't say any more without copying what kriskaos said though.

I don't think Heath's performance as the Joker is a "copycat" of Nicholson's Joker at all. Heath's performance is unforgettable.

Asking this question is almost like asking if Christian Bale's batman is the same as Val Vilmer's batman or previous batmans.
